And That’s a Wrap for the Spanish Royal Visit

That’s all, folks. This morning King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain said a formal goodbye to Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace after a whirlwind 72-hour trip.

The week behind him, Philip has reportedly bid a final adieu to state visits, making this one of his last high-profile appearances as a full-time working royal. When he and the Queen make their annual sojourn to Balmoral later this summer, he will finally be able to enjoy a proper retirement at the ripe old age of 96.

While Britain will be navigating any number of sensitive diplomatic situations over the next few years as it deals with Brexit, this particular visit was an important one. The ties between Britain and Spain are notable, from geography to trade to plain-old history, and the relationship between the two royal families has been remarkably close for over a century.

The past three days have been a success, for all that teeth might have clenched during Felipe’s speech before Parliament on Wednesday. The engagements went off without a hitch and London put on quite a show for the couple between the diplomatic reception, the Guildhall banquet and the procession down the Mall. And that’s not even considering the engagements Felipe and Letizia undertook during the latter half of today highlighting Spanish culture alive and well in England.

In a nod to British high street fashion, Letizia’s pink skirt is by Topshop.

After saying goodbye, Felipe and Letizia were joined by the Queen and Philip’s second son, the Duke of York, at the Francis Crick Institute.

Unlike Thursday’s engagement with Andrew, the odd photo of this made it into the news, so here he is:

After that, the couple went on to visit the Weston Library at Oxford University and the College of Exeter.

By now they are home and safe in Madrid and the trip has officially come to a close.

But if you thought there would be some respite before we gear up for an even busier few days next week with the Cambridge family in Poland and Germany, you were mistaken. Sunday will see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attend Wimbledon. This will be Kate’s second showing as patron this year, while this will be William’s first appearance.
