And so it is done – Donald Trump became the 12th U.S. president with whom the Queen has met. Trump and his wife, Melania, met HRH at Windsor Castle for an afternoon tea. The meeting began in the quadrangle where a Guard of Honour gave a royal salute and the U.S. national anthem was played in honor of the guests.
The Trumps are apparently big fans of the Queen – the President told The Sun yesterday:
“If you think of it, for so many years she has represented her country, she has really never made a mistake. You don’t see, like, anything embarrassing. She is just an incredible woman. My wife is a tremendous fan of hers. She has got a great and beautiful grace about her.”
Meanwhile, the couple arrived at Windsor from Chequers where Trump had been meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May. On the agenda was trade, Brexit and recent, um, personnel changes, but you can read more about that on the actual news 🙂
Though Trump spent last night in London courtesy of the U.S. Ambassador’s residence, his itinerary has purposefully kept him outside the capital. Massive protests are ongoing in the city criticizing Trump’s presence in the country and the administration’s policies. A few protesters did strategically place themselves at Windsor, but I’ve no idea whether they were actually visible or audible to the Trumps.
In contrast, the royal meeting itself looked relatively quiet. Melania wore a cream, belted suit by British designer Victoria Beckham. It’s anyone’s guess what the three actually spoke about, but given that Trump’s mother was Scottish, perhaps they could share a mutual appreciation for Scotland.
As expected, the Queen wasn’t joined by any other members of her family. My guess is that even if the Duke of York or Earl of Wessex were tapped it would have made the meeting seem like a bigger deal than the British government is interested in making it, so she carried this one out solo. And frankly, though the idea of Trump meeting the Queen offended many, I doubt she broke a sweat.
On a lighter note, Kensington Palace announced yesterday that the Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex will attend Wimbledon tomorrow. This, my friends, is the moment we’ve (well, I’ve, at least) have been waiting for. Kate will turn up again on Sunday with the Duke of Cambridge, ending the games on a high note.
The next engagement on the books is this coming Tuesday when Meghan and the Duke of Sussex attend a celebration in Nelson Mandela’s honor, while we’re still due to see the official photos from Prince Louis’s christening earlier this week. My guess is that they didn’t want to overshadow Harry and Meghan’s Dublin tour or Trump’s visit, so we’ll either get them this weekend or early next week. At least, let’s hope so!
