Kate Presents Her First Trophy as Wimbledon Patron

On Sunday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the men’s final at Wimbledon, as has become tradition. And I have to say, while Kate always seems pleased to be at Wimbledon, she looks particularly animated and relaxed whenever she’s attending with William. This year was a particularly special as Kate, for the first time in her capacity as royal patron, handed out the winning trophy to Novak Djokovic.

This was a big moment, and I would imagine it felt slightly surreal for Kate, who has been attending Wimbledon as a fan since long before she married William.

In the years past the trophy has usually been handed out by the Queen’s first cousin, the Duke of Kent, who serves as Wimbledon’s president. It’s a bit of a passing of the torch, and a fitting one.

She had kind words for runner-up and family friend Roger Federer, telling him that he made an “incredible” showing during what proved to be the longest-ever men’s final in Wimbledon’s history.

In fact, Federer is such a close friend of the family that not only have he and his family visited the Cambridges’ Norfolk home of Anmer Hall, but he’s even given a tennis lesson to Prince George. Kate has revealed in the past that she’s already introduced him and Princess Charlotte to the game, so it’s clear the couple are hoping to pass along their interest to their children.

The pictures cracking me up, so here’s a few to enjoy. So many emotions, and so much stress:

On the fashion front, Kate wore a new Emilia Wickstead dress in baby blue. I loved this look – everything from its color to its fabric to its length worked for me. I thought it was particularly sweet she and William ended up matching, and we know how fond Kate is of color coordination(!)

With Wimbledon behind us, it’s unclear when we’ll see Kate next. She and William have had a long-time engagement scheduled for August 9 (when they host the King’s Cup Regatta on the Isle of Wight), but I would imagine we’ll see her a few times before that. Interestingly, it’s been a while since Kensington Palace announced one of Kate’s engagements beforehand. Her engagements for the Photographic Society and her garden’s debut at Hampton Court were both “surprises,” so it’s actually been over a month since we’ve had regularly scheduled programming. Some of that I think is happenstance, so it’ll be interesting to see if things go back to normal in the next week or so.
