The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge turned up for the Irish Guards’ St Patrick’s Day parade today to hand out shamrocks – an event that has basically become an annual tradition for the couple save a brief blip in 2016 when Kate bowed out. The two even made sure they were there in 2017 in-between #skigate and their mini-tour of Paris, while it was one of Kate’s last engagements in 2018 before the birth of Prince Louis.
The event always follows a pretty strict script – the two present shamrocks to the officers, they pin one on the batallion’s Irish setter mascot, pose for a group photo and enjoy a few sips of Guinness at the cavalry barracks.
And last but not least, Kate almost always wears green in honor of the holiday (save that time she wore brown, but whatever). This year Kate debuted a new bespoke coat by Alexander McQueen that featured the brand’s signature military-esque details on the bodice and the peplum-esque flaps at the waist. Normally I’m not a huge fan of Kate’s military-themed garments (particularly when she wears them to military events), but I do like this coat and, I have to say, it does look very Irish.
We’ll next see Kate on Tuesday for a visit to the Foundling Museum, but in the meantime I will be getting a post up tomorrow that addresses news of the household split and indications that Commonwealth Day marked the beginning of the Duchess of Sussex’s maternity leave.
