What Prince Philip’s Retirement Means for Everyone Else

This past week Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip will be retiring from public duties at the end of August. While he will remain patron of his 700+ charities, he will not carry out engagements unless he so chooses and he has left the door open for the organizations to choose a successor – a member of the Royal Family or not – if they wish. The Queen, the Palace stressed, will continue working as usual, though in the past few years she has scaled back certain duties by relying more heavily on her eldest son, the Prince of Wales, and curtailing overseas travel.

Prince Philip to Officially Retire From Royal Duties

There was a bit of a furor last night when news came out that staff had been summoned to Buckingham Palace for an unexpected meeting. Speculation ran the gamut of a death to an abdication notice to the decision that the Queen and Prince Philip would decamp to Windsor or Balmoral Castles full-time. A few international news outlets even went so far as to publish news of Prince Philip’s death, posts which have been subsequently taken down since the truth is that he will be retiring from royal duties this fall.

Kate Recycles Catherine Walker Coat for Easter Service

Happy Easter! The Duchess of Cambridge gifted us a surprise appearance this morning by joining the Royal Family for an Easter service at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. She and the Duke joined the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, Peter and Autumn Phillips, the Wessexes, the Princess Royal and Timothy Laurence for what became quite the family affair.

Royal Roundup April 9 – 14: Toronto Jaunts, Maundy Thursday & a New Diana Award

A few odds and ends from the week:

  • The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh took part in the Maundy Thursday service at Leicester Cathederal yesterday. Queen, as per tradition dating back to the 13th century, distributed alms. This year, the “Maundy money” was handed out to 91 men and 91 women representing the Queen’s age. Back in the day, the celebration included the monarch washing members’ of public feet in addition to the alms, but that fell by the wayside starting with James II in the 17th century. This year each pensioner, as per custom, was handed a white and red purse. One of the recipients told reporters:

“It’s been such a wonderful occasion – she’s amazing because she smiled at every single person and then spoke to the children at the end. I thought ‘She’s just incredible, a wonderful woman.'”

Royal Roundup March 12-16: Malawi, Chi & the Rest of Windsor on a Roll

Last week I put this out a bit late and this week I’m putting it out a bit early, but in the interest of clearing the decks for Friday & Saturday’s Paris trip, here’s a quick rundown on what the rest of the Royal Family has been up to this week.

  • I’ve not seen this reported elsewhere, but Katie Nicholl wrote an article for Vanity Fair  in the Verbier aftermath claiming that the Duchess of Cambridge was none too pleased by news coming out of the Duke of Cambridge’s recent ski trip. According to an unnamed source:

“It was William’s choice to go away, but make no mistake Kate wears the trousers in their marriage, and she won’t be happy with William’s antics. She thought his partying days and larking around with the boys was a thing of the past. I imagine she’ll find this humiliating and William will have come in for a pasting.”

So, do with that what you will. I was skeptical up until the point I saw the byline; there are about five royal reporters that would get a solid source for that quote and Nicholl is one of them.

BRF Unveils London Memorial to Iraq & Afghanistan Wars

It’s rare that the whole gang gets together, so today was a unique engagement in that the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry all gathered in London for the unveiling of a new memorial to honor the veterans and civilians who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And unlike events which Kate, or William and Kate, carry out for their patronages, engagements which feature the extended family really show where they fit into the broader royal puzzle. In other words, they’re still the new kids on the block compared to the Queen and Prince Philip, or the Prince of Wales.
