Just a few weeks after shutting down her personal website The Tig, Meghan Markle attended the Audi Polo Challenge on Saturday where she cheered on Prince Harry playing polo. What does this mean? Well, in the short-term engagement rumors are in overdrive as headlines blasted all afternoon about what this says about the strength and seriousness of the relationship.
And yes, that’s about right. From Day 1, Harry has given every indication that he’s in this for the long-haul and for a couple that hasn’t commented on their relationship, this certainly hasn’t been secret. There are definitely similar strains at play here that were apparent for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge post-2007 breakup.
Now, to be clear, this isn’t unprecedented. Harry has had former girlfriends join him in public in the past – indeed, his most recent long-term girlfriend did so just before they broke up, so this is by no means a sure thing. It’s not as though she was walking two steps behind him at an official engagement, but it is certainly a sign that we are moving towards – and not away from – a Palace announcement.
To me, the clearest sign was the shutting down of The Tig, and less this polo appearance or the rumors that she will attend Pippa Middleton’s wedding later this month as Harry’s date. The latest on that front, by the way, is that she’s taken a week off of work in Toronto to be in town for the day-of (ceremony and reception, apparently – a fact which is only notable given Pippa has reportedly implemented a “no ring, no bring” policy) and spend some time with Harry in London.
I just don’t think she would have agreed to take the website down if this relationship wasn’t chugging full-steam ahead, particularly given that there wasn’t any language offering an “out” for picking back up in the future.
Anywho, “firsts” are exciting, so certainly this was fun to see today. William was also playing polo, making it quite the family affair. You can see all the other celebs in attendance here.
Meghan was wearing an Antonio Berardi navy, mullet skirt dress with buttons, a white blazer for which I haven’t seen an ID and what appears to be a polka dot Dolce & Gabbana clutch. I almost always love what Meghan is wearing, so I was all for it.
But I’m pretty much all for everything about this relationship – quite possibly because six months after the original Kensington Palace press release I’m still slightly surprised by it.
As a “friend” of theirs has been quoted in the papers as saying: “What this space…”
