So, What Role Will Royal Baby Sussex Play?

Sussex

Is this question premature? Oh, absolutely. But let’s take a stab at it anyway.

Let’s start with the issue of the title and move on from there. The most obvious question is whether this child will be a prince or princess, but the answer is actually a bit convoluted (of course!). As it stands today, barring any further intervention, the answer is no. So, let’s dig in:

Yesterday afternoon, the Duchess of Cambridge’s younger sister, Pippa Matthews, gave birth to a baby boy. He was born at 1:58 pm GMT, weighing 8 lbs and 9 oz. No word yet on a name, but based on how quickly the birth was confirmed with media, I’m going to guess we’ll get the news sooner rather than later.

William & Kate Attend the First Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit

I don’t remember why now, but I was recently thinking about this lilac Emilia Wickstead that the Duchess of Cambridge debuted in Germany last summer. I think I was thinking that it could be wedding appropriate if paired with the right hat or fascinator, but who can say? Anyway, when I first saw photos from today I didn’t recognize them as such – instead, thinking they were recycled images from Hamburg. But no, William and Kate are out and about at the first Global Ministerial Mental Health Summit and we have our first royal recycle of the season.

With that in mind, here’s a little bit about what’s on the horizon – and what you can expect here on this site.

King John’s First Marriage

King John of England (From the Historia Anglorum, Chronica majora). Artist: Paris, Matthew (c. 1200-1259)

Fun fact: Henry VIII was not the first English monarch to divorce his wife. That dubious honor goes to King John of Magna Carta fame, though it should be noted that the “divorce” was in fact an annulment and, as I’ve noted before, it was a bit of a reverse-Katherine of Aragon situation. In John’s case, he left his English wife for a brilliant foreign match and not the other way around. His motivation for doing this was, however, a situation Henry would have found familiar – he was a younger son not originally intended for the throne.
