Surprise! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made an appearance yesterday at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of the season hosted by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. Members of the Royal Family present made a formal entrance and then dispersed to mingle with guests, making what I can only imagine were several rounds of excruciating small talk with dozens of strangers who know all sorts of details about their personal lives, all while onlookers took photos on their phones.

William IV & the FitzClarences

The coat of arms of the FitzClarence family

In 1791 an actress by the name of “Mrs. Jordan” became acquainted with William, Duke of Clarence, third son of King George III. She was 30-years-old and the mother of four illegitimate children via two different men. Three of them were fathered by Sir Richard Ford, who she moved in with after he promised to marry her. He didn’t and once she met William she promptly jumped ship.

The great love of her life was George Inchbald, another actor, who left her brokenhearted when he failed to propose, and before him came an army lieutenant, Charles Doyne, who did propose and was roundly refused. Her first illegitimate child was fathered by Richard Daly, the manger of an Irish theatre company in Cork. Their child, a daughter named Frances, would eventually follow her mother on the stage.

Mrs. Jordan was born Dorothy Bland, a name by which she was known until she left Doyne for Inchbald and reinvented herself, taking the name from the River Jordan which she claimed to have metaphorically crossed when she left Ireland for England.

The Guilt of Anne Boleyn

800px-Anne_boleyn

Today in 1536 Anne Boleyn, Queen of England and second wife of Henry VIII, was charged with adultery, incest and high treason. Four days later she was beheaded at the Tower of London. During her life, Anne was a creature of fascination – a woman that seemingly appeared out of nowhere and inspired the King of England to turn Western Europe upside down. In death, she has continued to nag historians by posing as many questions as answers – did she love Henry? Was she motivated by ambition? Was she as chaste as she claimed? What were her methods for keeping him interested? Why couldn’t she deliver a son? Was she guilty? Who was the cause of her downfall?

This past week Sophie, Countess of Wessex traveled to Oslo to take part in a rather epic birthday celebration for Norway’s King Herald V and Queen Sonja. In addition to Sophie, members of royal families from Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, Greece, Luxembourg, Belgium and Monaco flocked to the event, making it quite the fete of crowned heads.

Today the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry hosted a garden party at Buckingham Palace for children of members of the armed forces who have died in service. The Palace’s gardens were turned into an outdoors festival, with games, food and entertainment

Around 850 children and teenagers turned up at the Palace this afternoon where the three young Royals made it clear the day was about their guests by providing children’s performance artists, face painting and plate spinning. At one point Kate helped launch a massive water balloon across the lawn via a giant slingshot, which you really don’t see every day.

Kate Visits Luxembourg in Emilia Wickstead

Apologies for the lateness of this post, but then again I’m not convinced the Duchess of Cambridge shouldn’t apologize for wearing the world’s most boring coat dress. I’m only half-kidding, but we’ll get there.

Let’s start at the beginning: Kate kicked off her visit to Luxembourg, a solo trip she undertook on behalf of the Queen, by stopping by the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM), where she toured exhibits by Sir Tony Cragg and Darren Almond.

Scandal, Divorce & Exile: The Legacy of Caroline Matilda

Caroline-Mathildeofwales_denmark.jpg

I said a couple months ago that the “Georges” were as brutal as their Tudor counterparts, which primarily stems from their treatment of the women in their lives. It wasn’t so much the “Georges” themselves, as the time period. The corsets and classical music and horse-drawn carriages may conjure images of “civility,” but really those are only different dressings for a society that still insisted on many of the same benchmarks from its women. Fertility, of course. Fidelity, in public at least. And the hazier expectation that family honor is housed in the “virtue” of its women.

Like Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard in the 16th century, there are a few figures from the 17th and 18th century that scream out the same legacy of near-martyrdom at the altar of family service. One of them is Princess Caroline Matilda, who would serve as queen of Denmark for six years and die disgraced, divorced and alone.

Philip’s Grandmother: Victoria of Hesse, Marchioness of Milford Haven

There was consternation when Princess Elizabeth announced her engagement to Prince Philip in 1947 due to his German relations. All of his sisters were married to German men, three of whom had Nazi connections, while his father was a member of the Greek royal family which had been ousted between the world wars. In short, he was foreign, but he also had strong ties to the British Royal Family. His mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg, who had been born at Windsor Castle, named for her grandmother, Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse, third child of Queen Victoria.

When the first Princess Alice died in 1878 – the first of the Queen’s children to do so – Victoria took up the mantle of offering her grandchildren motherly guidance. They spent considerable time in England and Scotland in their youths, and while two of the siblings would marry Russians, three of them married cousins from the extended BRF. The eldest, Victoria, who would become Philip’s grandmother, was one such sibling.

What Prince Philip’s Retirement Means for Everyone Else

This past week Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Philip will be retiring from public duties at the end of August. While he will remain patron of his 700+ charities, he will not carry out engagements unless he so chooses and he has left the door open for the organizations to choose a successor – a member of the Royal Family or not – if they wish. The Queen, the Palace stressed, will continue working as usual, though in the past few years she has scaled back certain duties by relying more heavily on her eldest son, the Prince of Wales, and curtailing overseas travel.

So, Meghan Markle Attended a Public Event With Prince Harry

Just a few weeks after shutting down her personal website The Tig, Meghan Markle attended the Audi Polo Challenge on Saturday where she cheered on Prince Harry playing polo. What does this mean? Well, in the short-term engagement rumors are in overdrive as headlines blasted all afternoon about what this says about the strength and seriousness of the relationship.

And yes, that’s about right. From Day 1, Harry has given every indication that he’s in this for the long-haul and for a couple that hasn’t commented on their relationship, this certainly hasn’t been secret. There are definitely similar strains at play here that were apparent for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge post-2007 breakup.
