A day late and a dollar short…but the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s five-day visit to Pakistan is officially underway. The couple touched down yesterday evening, their travel reportedly having been scheduled around their ability to drop off Prince George and Princess Charlotte at school on Monday morning.

The Duchess of Cambridge made a “surprise” appearance at the Natural History Museum’s Angela Marmont Centre today to learn more about its efforts to protect UK wildlife. In this engagement’s case, it was clearly tipped to royal reporters ahead of time under embargo…which was then broken. Thank you, Twitter.

Royal Roundup: The Swedish Royal Family, Football & a Middleton Wedding

JM

Let’s catch up on some odds and ends from the last couple of days. For starters, Thursday is World Mental Health Day, an event commemorated by the Cambridges and the Duke of Sussex for the last couple of  years. This year, the one-time “fab four” have reunited to lend their voices to a PSA promoting the initiative “Every Mind Matters” directed by Richard Curtis.

Ok, back to London. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are less than two weeks out from a five-day visit to Pakistan that will mark their first longer-term tour since the two visited Sweden and Norway in the winter of 2018. Thus, today, the two kicked things off with a visit to The Aga Khan Centre where they met with none other than the Aga Khan, a title held by the Imām of the Nizari Ismāʿīli Shias.

William & Kate Christen New Polar Research Ship in Birkenhead

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Birkenhead today to christen a new polar research ship the RSS Sir David Attenborough. Fun fact: the public was given the chance to vote on the ship’s name and they chose “Boaty McBoatface,” which is magnificent, but unfortunately vetoed by the government. That particular moniker was instead bequeathed on a small submarine housed on the ship.

Kate Makes a Surprise Visit to Evelina London Sunshine House

Another day, another surprise engagement for the Duchess of Cambridge. I’d say this was almost becoming the standard for Kensington Palace, but earlier this week they announced a new engagement for both Cambridges next Thursday. Granted this has really become more of a practice for Kate’s solo engagements, so it’s unclear if this is a thing or partly coincidental.

And so we have it: the Duchess of Cambridge’s first engagement of the autumn season! Today’s appearance was unannounced, but only a half “surprise” given that the event itself was promoted and royal reporters/watchers speculated last week that we were likely to see HRH attend. I’ll be interested to see if this trend of unannounced engagements continues.

Princess Charlotte officially started “big school” this morning at Thomas’s Battersea. The four-year-old princess was escorted to her first day by big brother Prince George and her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, while the family was greeted at a side entrance by the same teacher who met William and George two years ago.

Royal Roundup: Balmoral Visits & Press Statements

At this point, August is really turning into a pick your poison proposition for the Royal Family…and us. Would you rather talk about private planes or the Duke of York’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein? (If your answer is neither, well, my apologies). Let’s start with the positive.
